SAP HANA Operational Best Practises, Optimising HANA Performance and Cost

The HANA Experts Digital Forum

Our comprehensive SAP HANA experts webinar series has, so far, explored how to make the business case for SAP HANA and how to embark on your SAP HANA journey following it. In the fourth webinar, available here, we have combined our architectural know-how with our vast SAP HANA experience to share with you some SAP HANA operational best practices.

Capacity and performance

The webinar begins by sharing a data classification strategy. The fact is, your data load will grow over time and you need a strategy in place for when it runs out of space. We provide a table in which you can classify your data by age, size, temperature and so on. This table can be shared with your colleagues so that, when faced with capacity challenges, you have an up-to-date resource to refer to. This will also help with your operational capacity and performance planning.

Following this, the webinar examines the important relationship between capacity and performance. Take note of the graph used to represent where data is optimised for performance and cost, depending on data size and time.

Common configuration pitfalls

Part of operational best practice involves avoiding common configuration pitfalls. This webinar explores the three errors which, we believe, are the most common amongst newly installed systems:

  • Global allocation limit
  • Log mode
  • Log backup path

We explain how setting these configurations incorrectly can be problematic, and what you can do to avoid the mistakes.

Common Optimisations

The webinar then looks at the most common optimisations that Centiq performs for our customers. These are:

  • Workload management
  • SQL Plan Cache
  • Partitioning

We discuss how each of these creates real business impact, why they are helpful and why you should consider them in order to follow HANA operational best practices.

Scale out optimisation

Scale out optimisation is primarily for BW systems and aims to rebalance the system for you. We explore the reasons why a system loses its balance, and how Centiq’s scale-out optimisation capability can redistribute your data and rebalance the system.

What tools do I have available to me?

There are various tools to help you respond to your challenges and comply with HANA best practices. The webinar provides an audio-visual explanation of the data management options open to S/4 HANA and Suite on HANA, as well as those open to BW systems.

To wrap up the webinar, we introduce you to Optiq, Centiq’s own HANA optimisation tool. Optiq provides all the key metrics to monitor, manage and optimise your SAP HANA solution
