Linux Engineer (Sysadmin / DevOps): An ambitious hands-on Linux Engineer with a combination of System Administration and Development Operations experience, and experience of CentOS / Redhat, Ubuntu / Debian and SUSE, is required to support internal development efforts for continuous integration infrastructure, for an established innovative provider of SAP HANA project delivery and managed services to leading UK Organisations.
The Linux Engineer will join an existing Operations team of Linux system administrators who have a primary focus of supporting the external customer needs managing SAP HANA systems. This position bridges the gap between the development team and the operation team and will require the Linux Engineer to communicate with both developers and operations to ensure the developers can continue at pace without the Operation team being left behind. The Linux Engineer will extend the operations skills into the tools needed to support a CI (continuous integration) environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Responding to the documented requests from customers (largely internal) for upgrades or changes to the infrastructure
  • Ownership of the company customer facing systems with emphasis on ensuring change control processes are followed
  • Ensure key internal systems are identified and either replicated or backed up and for maintaining a log of the success/failure of these
  • Provide input into the strategic direction for the use of internal systems and DevOps tools
  • Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job in terms of skills and understanding
  • Improve the general level of CI understanding within the Ops team, by being an enthusiastic advocate of the DevOps tools and principles
  • Perform light lifting (~10kg) for occasional HW installation in the data centre
  • Happy to occasionally start early or finish later when client needs demand Out of hours callout support as part of a rota (Normally 1 week in 6, typically 10 calls per week)

Skills & Experience

  • Excellent Linux knowledge with experience of CentOS/Redhat, Ubuntu/Debian and SUSE
  • Virtualisation including VMWare, KVM
  • Networking, Firewalls, iptables Security, OpenVAS DNS
  • Basic Windows Server management knowledge
  • Experience of working with Active Directory and FreeIPA or other LDAP on Linux
  • Building and maintaining YUM/RPMS and .DEB packages as part of a continuous integration process
  • Setup and management of Jenkins, Travis or similar CI management experience
  • Knowledge of Change Management processes
  • Passionate about providing a first class customer service
  • Comfortable with oral and written communications

  • Resourceful and creative in Problem Solving. Ability to assess and adapt to customer/colleagues IT knowledge levels
  • Able to think independently and suggest ideas for improvement.
